Chapter 1 – The Boy Behind the Glasses

Ethan Cole hated mornings. Not because he was lazy, but because mornings meant walking into Hartfield University with those same mocking eyes on him.

The campus was alive with noise guys tossing footballs across the ground, girls laughing on the steps, music spilling from open dorm windows. Everyone belonged somewhere. Everyone but him.

He pulled the hood of his sweatshirt lower, adjusting his thick-framed glasses. The world behind them was blurred and slightly tinted, just the way he preferred distant.

“Yo, Glass-boy!”

Derek Johnson’s voice cut through the chatter. Derek was the classic college tyrant—broad shoulders, perfect jawline, and a laugh that always carried cruelty. Two of his friends followed, chuckling like backup singers.

Ethan didn’t react. He just shifted his bag higher and kept walking.

“You deaf too?” Derek grabbed his shoulder and spun him around. “What’s in the bag, Cole? Comic books? Or maybe some love letters to your laptop?”The crowd nearby snickered.

Ethan’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond. Instead, he murmured quietly, “Excuse me,” and walked away.

Coward. Weakling. Nerd. The labels trailed him like shadows.

But not everyone agreed.

From the steps of the Humanities building, Madison Hayes watched the scene. She hated Derek’s antics, but she also knew how this campus worked. Stand against him, and you’d be next. Madison was popular enough to keep her place at the top, but not powerful enough to change the hierarchy.

Still… her eyes lingered on Ethan longer than she’d admit. He wasn’t just a nerd. There was something sharp about him, something deliberate in the way he ignored them all.

She sighed and walked inside, trying to shake the thought.

---

That evening, the library was nearly empty. Rows of shelves stood silent, the fluorescent lights humming faintly. Ethan sat at his usual corner, hunched over his notebook. His pen scratched across the page, his concentration absolute.Behind him, footsteps echoed.

“Evening, Glass-boy.” Derek again, flanked by two of his companions. “Didn’t like how you brushed me off earlier.”

Ethan didn’t look up. “Library rules. Quiet, please.”

Derek grinned. “Cute. But I don’t do rules.”

He knocked Ethan’s books off the table. They scattered across the floor. One of the guys grabbed Ethan’s bag and emptied it—neat stacks of papers, a laptop, a small notebook with a black cover.

“Aw, look,” Derek sneered. “Little nerd diary.”

Something flickered in Ethan’s eyes as he stood. Calm. Controlled.

“Put it back,” he said softly.

Derek laughed. “Or what?”

And then—everything shifted.

Ethan removed his glasses, placed them carefully on the table, and in the same instant, his body seemed to change. His back straightened, his gaze sharpened, and his movements grew precise.

Before Derek could blink, Ethan twisted his wrist, dropping him to the ground with a muffled yelp. One of his companion lunged, only to be flipped over Ethan’s shoulder in a single, fluid motion. The third tried to punch, but Ethan sidestepped and swept his legs out from under him.

In less than thirty seconds, the three bullies were groaning on the floor.

Silence filled the library.

From behind a nearby shelf, Madison froze, her heart racing. She had stayed late for her assignment, but what she had just witnessed… it wasn’t possible.

This wasn’t the quiet nerd everyone mocked. This was someone trained. Dangerous.

Ethan calmly picked up his glasses, slid them back on, and the sharpness in his eyes faded, like he had flipped a switch. Without another word, he gathered his things and walked out, leaving the bullies behind.

But before he left the library, his eyes flicked toward the shelf where Madison hid.For a brief second, their gazes locked. And Madison felt it as a warning. He knew she had seen.
